We divide corrections into those related to citations and references, and all other issues. Please treat them as indicated below.

Citations/References

There are several ways to perform this type of correction. Please consult the dedicated help page for more information.

Non-Citation Issues

For corrections other than citations and references, click the ‘Report metadata issues‘ link at the bottom of INSPIRE search and record pages. This will take you to a form to submit a ticket to the INSPIRE team.

  1. Select ‘Report missing or incorrect information’
  2. Add the link to the affected record
  3. Select the appropriate issue from the following options:
    • References and citations (see the dedicated help page for more details on correcting references)
    • Other information on a paper (wrong affiliations, typos, LaTex issues…)
    • The information is outdated (my paper has been published, please update it)
    • Information in author profile (claiming, profile management, ORCID… See the section below for details on correcting author profiles)
  4. Be sure to identify the paper or record that has a problem in a unique way (DOI, journal reference, eprint number, report number, Author Identifier, INSPIRE ID, etc.) and clearly explain what the problem is and how you suggest it should be resolved.

Authors

Claim authorship of a paper to your INSPIRE author profile (links to instructions for related actions are separated out below):

  • Confirm authorship of papers listed in your INSPIRE author profile
  • Remove papers listed in your INSPIRE author profile, hence confirming that you are NOT the author/co-author
  • Claim authorship of papers listed under someone else’s INSPIRE author profile to your author profile
  • Claim authorship of papers from a literature search or detailed literature record.

To edit other metadata in an author profile, such as your name, institutional history, ORCID, etc., submit an update through this form.

    1. Select ‘Report missing or incorrect information’
    2. Add the link to the affected author profile
    3. Select the option ‘Information in author profile (claiming, profile management, ORCID…)’
    4. Clearly explain what the problem is and how you suggest it should be resolved.

Jobs

You can update jobs entries (including the deadline, description, etc.) that you have submitted yourself when logged in with ORCID. If you no longer want a job posting to appear in the search results, you can “remove” it by marking it as closed.

If you need to submit a correction to a job entry that you did not submit yourself (e.g., an entry submitted by a colleague who is no longer with your institution), use this form.

  1. Select ‘Report missing or incorrect information’
  2. Add the link to the affected job entry
  3. Select from the options ‘Other information on a paper (wrong affiliations, typos, LaTex issues…)‘ or ‘The information is outdated (my paper has been published, please update it)‘
  4. Clearly explain what the problem is and how you suggest it should be resolved. Please also clarify why you are submitting a correction through the form, rather than updating the entry yourself as the original submitter.

Correcting anything else (seminars, conferences, institutions, experiments, journals, etc.)

To submit a correction to a record from any other collection, use this form.

Note that INSPIRE uses standardized names for records in these collections, so your name change suggestions may not be implemented.

]]> Most used search operators in INSPIRE https://help.inspirehep.net/knowledge-base/most-used-search-operators-in-inspire/ Fri, 25 Jun 2021 14:43:26 +0000 https://inspirehep.net/help/?post_type=ht_kb&p=426 Since INSPIRE counts over 1 million records – and the number keeps growing – we wanted to make it easier for our users to flip through the database in quest of a specific paper.

Following a study in 2019, we found out that almost 60% of the searches were based on author information (name, BAI…), followed by search per title (8.4%), and search per eprint/recid (both 5.1% each). Taking into account other queries commonly used, we were able to select out the most popular SPIRES search operators and keywords, and develop a system that should be more concise and precise.

Search basics: Keyword-based vs. free-form

INSPIRE’s custom query parser supports both precise keyword-based searching as well as general Google-like
free-form searching.

searching uses the familiar keyword terms, e.g. author searching “a e cremmer” and affiliation searching “aff ecole normale superieure”.

e.g. “quark” over any information in the record (title, author, journal, etc.) can be combined with keyword-style searching, e.g. “author:parke”.

 Title searching can be done on either individual title words or as a complete phrases using double quotes. Single quote searching performs a substring search. For example, “t ‘fusion‘” finds documents containing “diffusion” or “fusions” in the title. Note that this might give unexpected results when quoting several words.

 The flexible and sophisticated SPIRES author searching also works in INSPIRE. You can write author names as either “j ellis” or “ellis, j” and they will give the same result. However, this won’t work if the surname is a compound surname such as “Llewellyn Smith”. In this case, searching should always be done using a comma, that is, in the form “family names, given name”. The search “find a llewellyn Smith” would match authors listed as “Smith, L.” in addition to the desired result. Using a period or full-stop (“.”) has no effect on the search.

To understand how name searching works, consider the following table in a world with four physicists named John R. Ellis, Jane Q. Ellis, Peter James Ellis and Ronald James Ellis.
Including a middle initial will restrict the search to match only on records that also have the middle initial. Including the full given name will restrict the search to match only on the initial or the exact given name. In INSPIRE there
is no difference between the ordering of the initials (“J.R.” vs. “R.J.”).

The “first-author” search, “fa”, is the author search that can be used to search on the first author exclusively.

The “exact-author” search, “ea”, can be used to search on an author name exactly as it appears in the INSPIRE record. This search demands the use of the comma.

 When you find a paper and click on an author’s name, you will be taken to the author’s publication profile page. Each author profile page is connected to a signature consisting of initials, family name and a number (e.g., j.r.ellis.1 for John Ellis) which can also be used for searching.These pages are created by a program that identifies an author’s identity based on name, co-authors, affiliation and other metadata. For most authors it does quite well. For others, e.g. John Smith, it does less well.

In cases where authors have cleaned their publication lists, using the author publicaton profile page signature for searching will give you the most accurate result.

 This keyword is useful for narrowing a search to theoretical papers which typically have less than 5 authors or experimental papers written by the full collaboration. More information on this latter point can be found on our blog post

 When using several “and”, “or” and “not” operators in one search, operations are grouped together
starting from the right. For example, “a gaiotto or t defect and date 2016” finds all paper either authored by Gaiotto, or published in 2016 and containing “defect” in the title. This order is often not what is intended, so
parentheses can be added to manually control the order of operations. With parentheses, the previous search is the same as “a gaiotto or (t defect and date 2016)”, but is different from the (probably more useful) “(a gaiotto or t
defect) and date 2016”.
Logical operators: using operators and “:” to delineate search terms

Search logic: find papers with author Witten and title Jones.

Search logic: find papers with author name matching “Witten T. Jones”, so assuming nobody has a given name “Witten”, the author name in the paper will be “W. <name starting with T> Jones” or “<name starting with T> W. Jones”.

Search logic: find papers with author name matching “Witten Title Jones”, so assuming nobody has a given name “Witten” or “Title”, the author name in the record will be “W.T. Jones” or “T.W. Jones”.

Search logic: using “:” invokes the indexed keywords and finds papers with author “Witten” and title “Jones”.
Truncation:


 The asterisk wildcard can be used anywhere in the search term, as we have done in this example in the search for papers by O’Raifeartaigh.

Searches that become too general, e.g. “find t a*” will probably time out.

To find a particular article, use the journal name, the volume (including letter) and the first page number (or article ID)

 Date searching can be somewhat imprecise because the date could be the date the paper first appeared or the date of publication in a journal (including any possible errata). To search on the date a paper first appeared, use “de” (date-earliest). To search on the year of publication in a journal, use “jy” (journal-year).All dates must be in the ISO format, yyyy(-mm(-dd)), e.g. “2003”, “2003-06”, “2003-06-27”. Dates such as “today”, “yesterday”, “last month” (exactly one month from today) and “this month” (same as today) also work.Date searches using < or >, e.g. “find de > 2000”, will assume the earliest possible day and actually search “find de > 2000-01-01”.To limit your search to the date a paper first appeared (that is, the earliest date on the INSPIRE record), use “de” (date-earliest).There are also keywords for date-added (da or dadd) and date-updated (du dupd).

“Refersto” can be a useful tool for finding recent citations to your work. Be aware that the refersto operator finds the number of papers citing a given set of papers. This is not the same as counting the total number of citations to those papers. The refersto result includes papers citing multiple papers within the target set, and lists those only once. If you want the traditional count of total citations summed over a set of papers, use the citesummary format, as described above.

You can find these metrics by clicking the toggle next to the sorting options at the top of any HEP Literature search or author profile page.

 

We currently display the following citation statistics for any group of papers.

Total number of citeable papers analyzed
This is simply the number of papers from your search that were counted in the HTML citesummary. This is the number used for averages, etc. Other papers may have been found, but may not have been eligible for citation tracking.
Total number of citations
Simply the total number of citations to the papers in your search.
Average citations per paper
The above two numbers as a ratio.
Total number of citations minus self-citations
This is the sum over all papers of the number of citations minus the number of citations to a paper by at least one of the coauthors of any paper. Things to note here:

  • If you are doing a citesummary for author A, the self-cites for her paper 1 are all papers citing paper 1 written by author A or her co-authors for any paper author A has written.
  • If there are more than 20 authors on a paper, the collaboration name is used to exclude cites from papers with the same collaboration name. Collaboration is not used for papers under 20 authors. If the paper has more than 20 authors and no collaboration name, only the first 20 authors are used. This will exclude most self citations from that same group, but will miss a few from individual authors later in the list. This is a rare case.
h-index
The h-index (or simply, ‘h’) is defined as the number of papers with citation number higher or equal to h. It is intended as a useful index to characterize the scientific output of a researcher. First proposed by Hirsch in physics/0508025, it is explained better there than here.
Total number of citations minus RPP:
This count excludes all citations to the Review of Particle Physics. Activate this by clicking the ‘Exclude Review of Particle Physics’ checkbox in the facets.

  4. Be sure to identify the paper or record that has a problem in a unique way (DOI, journal reference, eprint number, report number, Author Identifier, INSPIRE ID, etc.) and clearly explain what the problem is and how you suggest it should be resolved.

To submit new content to INSPIRE, you must be logged in with your ORCID account (see this help page if you need to create an ORCID account). All submission forms can be found under the “Submit” menu at the top left of any page.

Literature

This form allows you to suggest a preprint, an article, a book, a conference proceeding or a thesis you would like to see added to the INSPIRE literature collection. We will check your suggestion with our content policy and transfer it to INSPIRE.

Instructions for literature submission of some particular cases:

  1. A preprint we have in the Literature collection has been published in a journal. If so submit a correction using this form. See this help page for more information on submitting corrections. Be sure to include the DOI, journal name, volume, year and page range.
  2. A paper has been published in a journal (or appears as a conference proceeding or theses or similar non-arXiv paper) and we have no record at all of it. In this case, we would appreciate it if you could provide us with information about the paper by using the literature submission form. Note that INSPIRE does harvest articles from some journals programmatically (see our content sources), but it may take a few weeks before they appear in the Literature collection. Therefore it is recommended not to submit published articles to INSPIRE immediately after publication
  3. If you would like an unpublished preprint entered into our database please send it to the E-print Archive (click for detailed instructions). It will then be part of our regular daily download if sent to one of the following archives:astro-ph.(CO and HE), gr-qc, hep-ex, hep-lat, hep-ph, hep-th, nucl-ex, nucl-th, physics (accelerator subj.cat.), ins-det. Anything cross-listed to these archives will also be automatically entered into INSPIRE. We also strongly suggest you archive your PhD thesis at arXiv.org. If you still have the TeX file, you may also wish to archive the preprint of a published paper we are missing.
